Health Promotion
An important component of Te Tai Tokerau PHO’s strategic plan to improve health outcomes and reduce inequalities is to strengthen health promotion awareness, competency and action within Te Tai Tokerau PHO providers.
Te Tai Tokerau PHO resources the employment of two Whanau Ora / Healthy Eating Healthy Action Facilitators, based in two of the Māori Provider Organisations who are partners in the PHO Structure: Ngāti Hine Health Trust and Te Hauora o Te Hiku o Te Ika. These facilitators link in closely with the Green Prescription Communities regional project.
The facilitators are responsible for developing a range of relevant activities in areas across Northland, that enable participants in the Green prescription project to maintain and sustain their efforts in physical activity, and they are also working together to implement a range of activities and promotion to link into the One Heart Many Lives campaign.
Te Tai Tokerau PHO has sponsored the following health promotion activities
- A men’s health project on the Te Aupouri peninsula
- the kuia and kaumatua gym programme in Kaitaia which links in a group of older Māori to physical activity, and provides regular access to dietary and health advice
- adolescent health promotion activities through the two far North adolescent health clinics,
- the Te Houtaewa 90 mile beach run and waka ama festival;
- the Coast to Coast walk at Houhora;
- the Kerikeri men’s health night;
- Whanau ora activities related to One Heart Many Lives;
- Several physical activity options in the far North including Tai Chi, Wahine triathlon, Kaumatua games and walking groups
- The taxi initiative run in association with Age Concern has been extended to the far North. Over the last twelve months 1765 vouchers have been used by a total of 165 clients, enabling improved social contact and access to activities and events.
