The National Cervical Screening Programme

Available to all women in New Zealand between 20 and 70 years old. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable of all cancers.

Did you know that...

  • Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable of all cancers.
  • Cervical cancer is caused by certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus passed on by sexual contact.
  • Most people will come into contact with HPV at some stage during their life.  Most HPV infections clear by themselves, but some high-risk types can cause cell changes on the cervix that may lead to cervical cancer 10 to 20 years after infection.

Northland Health Services Plan

The Northland Health Services Plan (NHSP) is a 5-year plan with a 20-year horizon. Taking a 'whole-of-system’ approach - our Triple Aim focus is on addressing population health, delivering a high quality patient experience and considering cost and productivity

We need to do things differently to address the impending tsunami of escalating demand for services. Specifically, we need to be dealing with health needs more effectively ‘upstream’, in the primary and community setting. This will require the whole of the health sector – the DHB, primary health care, Maori providers and other NGOs – to work together to redesign the system.

Haere Mai, Welcome to Te Tai Tokerau PHO

Te Tai Tokerau Primary Health Organisation (Te Tai Tokerau PHO) works with local primary health care providers from Kawakawa in the Southern Bay of Islands to Te Hapua in the Far North to support the delivery of high quality primary health services.

As Northland PHOs, Te Tai Tokerau PHO and Manaia PHO (serving the greater Whangarei area and Dargaville),  work together to improve health outcomes for the district.

Te Tai Tokerau PHO is a Primary Health Organisation covering the area in yellow (click here), within the region covered and managed by Northland District Health Board.

The enrolled population of Te Tai Tokerau PHO at July 1st 2012 stood at 61,147 patients. In January 2011 Te Tai Tokerau PHO absorbed two neighbouring PHOs, Whangaroa PHO and Hokianga Health PHO in response to a directive from the Minister of Health to reduce the number of Primary Health Organisations nationally. The geographical area covered under the umbrella of Te Tai Tokerau PHO characterises the organisation as a rural PHO. At the same time Manaia PHO absorbed Kaipara PHO, and covers the southern, more urban area of Northland.
