Maori Health
Te Tai Tokerau PHO has an enrolled population of 42059 people, registered through member general practice providers in three localities – the Far North (including Kaitaia and surrounding districts), Kerikeri, and the Southern Bay of Islands. The demographics of these three areas differ significantly, thus influencing the types of services needed.
Te Tai Tokerau PHO serves a population with areas of significant deprivation. 48% of Māori enrolled live in Quintile 5, the highest level of deprivation according to the national deprivation index. 29% of the Te Tai Tokerau population are unable to be coded for deprivation, due to lack of availability of rapid codes necessary for complete address information.
The inequality in health outcomes between Māori and non Māori can be seen in the graphs below, showing the percentage of the population according to age and ethnicity. Māori in Northland are dying much earlier than non Māori, but there are a significantly higher number of Māori children currently in the 0-25 age range.
